Elvang Denmark is a Danish design company that specializes in exclusive textiles made from alpaca wool.
Elvang was established after a backpacking trip, when Tina and Lasse Elvang completely by chance became aware of the unique qualities of alpaca wool.
In 2003, they were the first to introduce throws made of alpaca wool in Scandinavia.
Elvang represents the best of both worlds: the Peruvian tradition for producing exclusive textiles in alpaca wool, and Scandinavian design based on the principles of ethical trade.
Elvang is a guaranteed fair trade member of the WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization). This ensures that Elvang’s products are produced in proper conditions.
It was back in 2002 that Tina and Lasse Elvang embarked on their backpacking trip to Peru – their first holiday together.
Once there, they encountered a hard-working and warm-hearted people with a proud craft tradition. The trip also introduced them to those charming alpacas and their fantastically soft wool.
The alpacas have been important to the Peruvians since the Inca era and their fibres are considered to be among the finest in the world.
Tina and Lasse returned to Denmark with plenty of new inspiration from Peru – as well as a new-found knowledge of the wonderful alpaca fibres. The idea for their company was born!
They envisaged the ‘best of both worlds’ – a combination of Scandinavian design and the Peruvian tradition of weaving textiles from Alpaca fibres all based on the principles of fair trade.
Their first collection was presented to selected distributors in 2003, and much has happened since.
Elvang is now sold in many countries around the world and new products are being added to the company’s range on a regular basis. Elvang now employs people from different continents, and the company has achieved the World Fair Trade Organization’s guaranteed member status, its highest level of certification.
And despite all that, the essence of Elvang remains the same. Elvang is all about achieving integrity across the entire supply chain, i.e. correct conduct and looking out for each other. That’s why we say that we create textiles that have integrity.
